Case 2# METTEL ’S CHINESE SOURCING CRISIS OF 2007

METTEL ’S CHINESE SOURCING CRISIS OF 2007

Background: Mattel, the world’s largest toys company, has been facing some rough challenges in recent years due to some safety scandals revolving toy design and manufacturing in China. During June 2007 Mattel was forced to massively recall toys due to lose magnets and excess lead found in some of the Mattel toys that posed immediate danger to the children that played with them.

Problem: The failure of their partner of using over level lead paint is the starting point of series of recall. It leads to the reputation crisis of Mattel product, thousands of parents are concerning about the safety of the toy their children are playing, lawsuit are made to against the failure of Mattel. Mattel is the largest toy company in the world, and it has been practicing the outsourcing policy from China for decades due to the cheap cost of labor and intensive production there. Mattel and its Chinese suppliers had maintained a partnership over decade. Due to the trust toward to the Chinese partner, Mattel has lost its regulation to the Chinese supplier. However due to the increasing cost of the labor and material of production, the manufacturer has no choice but to switch to a lower cost material to replace to maintain their profit. Rather to blame the evil mind of the manufacturer in China, the rising price is also one of the key factor which drive them to lost their ethics after so many years of cooperation with Mattel.

Theory: According to Steve New, Dana Brown (September 2008), Said That “the public discourse surrounding these events can become disconnected from the operational reality, and lead to potentially dysfunctional regulatory responses.”

Conclusion:
Mattel should Control its Supply Chain better, to cope with design problems, product misuse, lead paint issues and usage of Unapproved Suppliers.
Mattel should inspect its subcontractors well.
Direct Site Visits to Suppliers to be able to make evaluations on their performances.

                    Transaction Cost Analysis Theory Outdated
Accuracy and Validity of the documentations should be ensured
Personnel with knowledge, skills and abilities to recognize the falsified documents
Determine critical raw materials or processess. Strictly follow up, all the operations related to those parts, well
Improve information flow through the chain
Geographical Proximity of the Employess responsible for Training and Supervising Chinese Contractors is an Issue
Understand integrated global sourcing requirements and success factors

Case1 # Black Gold

Black Gold

First, Black Gold is a 2006 documentary about an Ethiopian farmer's journey around the world as he attempts to get a fair price for his quality coffee beans. Directed by British brothers Marc and Nick Francis, the film addresses the international coffee trade and its ramifications for the farmers. The film took three years to make with a budget of $760,000.

The Story

"Multinational coffee companies now rule our shopping malls and supermarkets and dominate the industry worth over $80 billion, making coffee the most valuable trading commodity in the world after oil. But while we continue to pay for our lattes and cappuccinos, the price paid to coffee farmers remains so low that many have been forced to abandon their coffee fields. Nowhere is this paradox more evident than in Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Tadesse Meskela is one man on a mission to save his 74,000 struggling coffee farmers from bankruptcy. As his farmers strive to harvest some of the highest quality coffee beans on the international market, Tadesse travels the world in an attempt to find buyers willing to pay a fair price. Against the backdrop of Tadesse's journey to London and Seattle, the enormous power of the multinational players that dominate the world's coffee trade becomes apparent. New York commodity traders, the international coffee exchanges, and the double dealings of trade ministers at the World Trade Organisation reveal the many challenges Tadesse faces in his quest for a long term solution for his farmers."

Finally, BLACK Gold doesn't provide any clean or clear solutions – Those are up to the viewer to find. And the film won't answer all the questions you might have about fair trade or world trade or many of the other questions you may have. Instead, the film points to some of the underlying problems that are creating the coffee crisis: unfair farm subsidies of western countries, skewed negotiations at the WTO, the aid provided to African countries in lieu of fair trade.

If you're a coffee drinker, this film's a must-see. And if after watching it, you want to get more involved with Black Gold and fair trade.
